First, you should know what a hard disk partition is. A hard disk partition is a part or section of the hard disk. Of course, a hard disk may consist of multiple partitions or only one partition. In most cases, the new computer you bought has only one partition--C:, so you have to repartition your hard disk to make your computer work more smoothly, and manage your files more effectively.
For example, if you have a 500G hard disk, you can partition a C: with 50G for installing Windows and applications, D: with 100G for saving non-program associated files, E: with 350G for saving your movies, music and photos. This way, when a problem occurs with Microsoft Windows, the OS partition can be completely formatted and reinstalled without affecting the data in partitions D: and E:.
